5 Ways to Prevent Glaucoma Complications

5 Ways to Prevent Glaucoma Complications

Glaucoma, an eye condition characterized by high pressure inside the eye, is the second leading cause of blindness. Although blindness can occur, it’s not inevitable. There are steps you can take to preserve your eye health and prevent glaucoma complications.

At iSight Vision Care’s state-of-the-art eye care clinics in Fountain Valley and Huntington Beach, California, specialists Vicki Lin, MD, and Maryam Khatami, DO, provide glaucoma treatment to manage your intraocular pressure (IOP).

Lowering your IOP is the main goal of glaucoma treatment, but maintaining your overall health is also important. Here are five strategies you can use to lower the risk of glaucoma-related vision loss:

1. Get regular eye exams

Regular contact with your ophthalmologist can help you detect glaucoma as early as possible and start treatment to lower your IOP. There are no symptoms of glaucoma in its early stages, so you should schedule an eye exam every year to check in on your eye health.

When you detect glaucoma and start treatment early, you have a better chance of preserving your eyesight. If you have glaucoma, Dr. Lin or Dr. Khatami may recommend trabeculoplasty, trabectome, or another procedure to regulate your IOP.

2. Get moderate exercise

Exercise is important for many reasons, and maintaining your eye health is one of them. Be careful not to engage in exercise that is too intense, as high-intensity exercise can raise your intraocular pressure.

Moderate exercise, such as walking or jogging, can help lower your intraocular pressure to prevent glaucoma complications. If you’re wondering whether your current exercise routine is glaucoma-safe, talk to Dr. Lin or Dr. Khatami.

3. Wear sunglasses when it’s bright

You might instinctively wear sunglasses so you don’t have to squint when it’s bright, but doing so could also help prevent glaucoma complications.

Some research suggests that spending time in the bright sun can increase IOP and cause primary open-angle glaucoma, so invest in a pair of polarized sunglasses to give your eyes plenty of sun protection. It may also help to wear a wide-brimmed hat while in the sun.

4. Report symptoms and vision changes right away

Don’t ignore changes in your eyesight like double vision or blurry vision, even if those changes are subtle. Glaucoma may cause increasingly blurry vision, and any changes that occur can be irreversible.

It’s important to tell your ophthalmologist if you notice your vision getting worse, or if you notice other glaucoma symptoms like eye pain or bloodshot eyes. Dr. Lin or Dr. Khatami can evaluate your eyes and change course with your glaucoma treatment if need be.

5. Eat colorful foods

A varied diet of leafy greens, berries, and colorful vegetables can support your eye health with or without glaucoma. These natural foods contain nutrients like vitamin C and vitamin E that your eyes rely on to stay healthy.
